Mentorship — A ‘win-win’ alliance

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

Mentorship is viewed as a relationship in which an individual who has higher level of skills/experience in a certain domain is able to provide direction and guidance to another individual who requires that level of professional support. However, as being explored by many organisations today, mentorship can also be viewed as a mutually beneficial relationship providing value to both the parties involved. In this article, we discuss the various benefits that a mentor and mentee can gain by virtue of this relationship.

Benefits to Mentors

1. Build your leadership skills – Taking lead in a mentoring relationship provides opportunities to enhance leadership skills in the form of motivating others, attitude formation and setting goals.

2. Learn new perspectives – By working with someone less experienced and from a different background, mentoring helps you gain a fresh perspective on things while also exploring new ways to think and analyse.

3. Advance your career – Refining your leadership and communication skills through mentorship sessions can strengthen your on-the-job performance, improving your prospects for a promotion or better career opportunities. Having demonstrated your support towards another individual’s growth and development projects you as a leadership resource in the eyes of your employers and clients.

4. Gain personal satisfaction – It can be personally fulfilling to know that you've directly contributed to someone's growth and development. This leads to higher self-esteem and a sense of fulfilment.

Benefits to Mentees

1. Gain valuable advice – By virtue of their experience, mentors can offer valuable insights and a sense of direction to the mentees. Mentors also act as guides and "sounding boards" for ideas, helping mentees decide on the best course of action in difficult situations.

2. Developing Competencies – Among the key objectives of mentorship is to provide to the mentee a platform for identifying and developing competencies required in the professional world. While a mentor may not directly impart training on those competencies, he or she can surely guide the mentee towards the right resources.

3. Learn new perspectives – Mentorship enables a mentee to explore new perspectives and a different way of looking at the situation. The newly gained insights can contribute highly towards a mentee’s professional development.

4. Advance your career – A mentor helps the mentee stay focused on his/her career through pertinent guidance and advice. It also acts as an opportunity to expand one’s existing network of personal and professional contacts
